This week we were are ask to discuss how in hospitality
organizations, physical attractiveness is unquestionably a factor used to
select employees in such positions as front-of-the-house food servers and hotel
front desk agents. I live in Las Vegas, also known as Sin City. Everywhere you
look you see beautiful people both as employees and as tourist. Many Vegas
businesses actually hire due to the way a potential candidate for a position
presents themselves. “Employee
recruiting and selection are the first two essential steps taken by business to
identify and choose the right employees, with the right qualifications, to
serve their customers." (Hayes, David K. Human Resources Management in the
Hospitality Industry, 1st Edition. Pg. 100. Wiley, 02/2008. VitalSource
Bookshelf Online). These employees are hired on as server models,
or cocktail server models. They come in already knowing that is exactly what is
expected. These procedures or called auditions verse interviews. "Hospitality managers at
all levels and in all sizes of organizations will continually find that they
must actively recruit employees. From company presidents to the lowest-skilled
entry-level employee, candidate recruitment will usually be an ongoing
activity." (Hayes, David K. Human Resources Management in the Hospitality
Industry, 1st Edition. Pg. 104. Wiley, 02/2008. VitalSource Bookshelf Online). I myself have been on a handful
of these types of auditions, its tough and no it is not always fair. The
appearance of employees is just another way of telling the consumers what is
expected of a customer. The type of customer businesses want to attract are
what they should look for in the employees they hire. When interviewing or
recruiting, it is crucial to make sure the person that is applying and wants
the jobs fits under the criteria of an eligible candidate. "Employee recruitment and selection efforts are
so crucial to the long-term success of every hospitality business and to all of
the hospitality managers who direct their operation's recruitment and selection
process." (Hayes, David K. Human
Resources Management in the Hospitality Industry, 1st Edition. Pg. 104. Wiley,
02/2008. VitalSource Bookshelf Online). It
is very important the employees hired match the cliental that comes into their
venue. If they don’t feel a certain vibe from the people working then it
effects the way costumers send their money.
